Reception to Metropolitan Dr.Yuhanon Mar Dimitrius

Dubai: A grand reception will be accorded to Dr.Yuhanon Mar Dimitrius, The Assistant Metropolitan of Delhi Diocese by the members of St.Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Dubai on 1st Dec’2010 at 7pm.

It is the maiden visit of Mar Dimitrius to UAE after resuming the responsibility of the Diocese.

Mar Dimitrius will be received at the International Airport, Dubai in the afternoon and will be escorted to the church from vicar’s parsonage to the church at 7pm. Thereafter a reception public meeting after the evening prayer and intercessory prayer.

The Metropolitan will be the chief resource person for the UAE Zone Conferences of OCYM and Marth Mariam Samajam on 2nd & 3rd of December 2010.

OCYM, Dubai Hosts Literary Workshop by Eminent Writers to Commemorate World Book Day

DUBAI: A literary workshop on contemporary Malayalam literature and the phenomenon of reading was held by OCYM Dubai unit on Friday, April 23, 2010.

T. Padmanabhan, renowned short story writer was the guest of honor for the workshop. Fr. Biju. P. Thomas, the vicar of St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Dubai presided over the function.

Fr. Biju. P. Thomas made the presidential address in which he rightly pointed out that it is the ability to think, read and write that distinguishes human beings from other animals.

In his typical forthright manner, T. Padmanabhan spoke fondly of his longstanding relationship with the Orthodox Church and recounted an encounter that he believed he had with Jesus.

T. Padmanabhan, master of the short story genre is the winner of the Sahitya Academy, Ezhuthachen and Odakuzhal awards. Even after a literary career spanning over six decades, his boundless enthusiasm for getting others to develop an interest in literature was exemplified by his exhortation to work on developing the church library.

P.K. Parakkadavu, also a Sahitya Academy award winner is reputed to be the author with the largest number of malayalam ‘short’ and ‘mini’ stories to his credit was another leader at the workshop, His works are acclaimed as ‘Stories born of poetry’ and ‘Poetry born of stories’. He enthralled his listeners with his take on the effectiveness of short story as a medium of expression. His interest not being restricted to Malayalam literature alone, he is currently working on a translation of a collection of Palestinian and Afro-Asian poems.

T.N. Prakash, who effectively juggles his dual roles as an author and a DEO with the department of schools was the third author who participated in this workshop.

Assistant vicar of Dubai parish, Fr. Pathrose Joy, parish secretary Marydasan Thomas, Rajan Panicker IAAS were other dignitaries onstage who spoke at the memorable function. Fr. Pathrose Joy honoured T. Padmanabhan for his outstanding achievements with a ponnada.

John P George, the vice-president of the unit welcomed the gathering. and Manoj Thomas, the unit secretary proposed vote of thanks.

St. Thomas OCYM, Dubai marks Centenary Catholicate Celebrations with Spectacular Photo Exhibit

DUBAI:Under the auspices of the Orthodox Christian Youth Movement attached to St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Dubai, a retrospective picture exhibition was officially opened on Friday, 26th March, 2010 by Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius, Metropolitan of the Calcutta Diocese and Asst.metropolitan of the Delhi diocese to herald the celebration of the centenary Catholicate year in 2012.

The landmark exhibition featured a remarkable collection of memorabilia including photos, paintings and historical documents covering the most significant developments in the growth of the Malankara Orthodox Church right from St. Thomas’s arrival in India in A.D. 52 to the events of the present day.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Metropolitan Mar Dionysius applauded the extensive efforts made by the OCYM members to obtain the exhibits from far flung sources to amass such a comprehensive display.

He added that many more such exhibitions should be held in the future to build up awareness in today’s youth about the determined vision and sacrifices made by the past leaders of the church to maintain its distinct identity and integrity as their legacy to future generations.

In conjunction with the photo exhibit, a seminar on the topic , “Malankara Orthodox church- yesterday, today and tomorrow” was also held tracing the evolution of the church to what it is today and discussing the direction the future of the church should take based on present day events.

The opening ceremony was also attended by other dignitaries including the vicar of Dubai parish, Fr. Biju P. Thomas, assistant vicar Fr. Pathrose Joy, vicar of the Jebel Ali parish Fr. Aju Abraham, CEO of the Parumala hospital Fr. Alexander Koodarathil, parish trustee Robinson Panicker,secretary Marydasan Thomas and joint secretary Boban Thomas.

OCYM Dubai Unit Handed Over Haiti Aid

DUBAI: It was a day of immense fulfillment for the members of St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral Youth Movement – Dubai (OCYM), when the materials collected by them for the relief of Haiti Earth Quake victims were handed over to Red Crescent , Dubai in a touching ceremony held at the St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Cathedral on Friday,5th March 2010.

With the permission of Ministry of Islamic Affairs through Red Crescent Dubai , OCYM collected large quantity of new ready made apparels, medicines and food stuff from the members and their well wishers to help the victims of earthquake which struck Haiti on 12 January 2010.

The Collected materials cost Indian Currency approximatly 30 Lacs were sorted, listed and packed by the members and families of OCYM who voluntarily worked day and night and were handed over to the Head of Red Crescent Society, Dubai , Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Alhaj Al Zarooni by Fr. Biju P Thomas, the Unit President and Vicar of St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral,Dubai.

Robinson Panicker, the Trustee of the Cathedral handed over members contribution cheque (Rs.5 Lacs).

Asst Vicar Fr. Pathose Joy, Vicar of Jabel Ali Congregation, Fr. Aju Abraham., OCYM Vice President, John P Geroge, Cathredral Secretary Marydasan Thomas, OCYM Secretary Manoj Thomas and Mohammed Kamal from the Red Crescent Society were present on the occasion.

General Convener Abi Paulose welcomed the guests and OCYM Tresurer Binny Mathew proposed the vote of thanks.
