St Stephens Church in Salalah Honours HH Catholicos


SALALAH: Moran Mar Baselious Marthoma Paulose II, Catholicose and Malankara Metropolitan and Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Metropolitan of Ahmedabad Diocese, were felicitated at a public reception at the St Stephens Church in Salalah on March 19.

Immediately upon arrival at the Salalah International Airport, the Holy Shepherd was taken to the church in a grand procession.

The Holy Qurbana was led by the Catholicos which was followed by the public meeting and reception for HH Catholicos and Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Ahmedabad Diocesan Metropolitan.

Dignitaries who accompanied the Supreme Head from Muscat include Fr James Geevarghese, Vicar, MGOC, Fr Dr Johns Abraham Konattu (Priest-Trustee, MOSC), M G George Muthoot (Lay Trustee, MOSC), Dr George Joseph (Malankara Association Secretary) and Deacon Jis Johnson, Secretary to His Holiness.

At the public reception, Fr Saju Padachira, Vicar, St Stephens Church delivered the welcome address, while the acceptance address by the Catholicos.

Mementos were also presented to the Catholicos and for the Diocesan Metropolitan Dr Mar Yulios.
Biju R David, Trustee, proposed the vote of thanks.

Priests of Calcutta Diocese with Commendable Service Felicitated


BHILAI: Priests conference of Calcutta Diocese held at St. Thomas Ashram, Bhilai on March 15, 16 of 2011 felicitated senior priests of the diocese, who completed 25 or more years of holy priesthood.

Metropolitan Dr.Mathews Mar Severios, Secretary to the Holy Episcopal Synod, presided over the meeting.

Fr. Jacob Skariah, the Priest Secretary, felicitated Diocesan Metropolitan Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius, who also has completed 25 years of priesthood and was presented with a plaque. Chor-Episcopos Mathias Ramban, who served the Church commendably for more than 51 years received special appreciation.

Fr. Geevarghese Ramban, Fr. Jacob Skariah, Fr. KK Joseph, Fr. P.T. Thomas, Fr. G. Varghese, Fr. Kurian Abraham, and Fr. Dr. Abraham Oommen were among the felicitated.

Dr. R. N. Dash, Director, MPCCET, Dr. Roymon, Principal St.Thomas College, Bhilai and Fr. P.S. Varghese felicitated the jubilarians during the auspicious occasion.

Submit Ourselves Unconditionally to Christ for Healing from Spiritual Leprosy: Dr. Mar Dionysius


NEW DELHI: “Submit ourselves to unconditionally to Jesus Christ for the healing of leprosy in our body-mind and spirit”, said Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius, Metropolitan of Calcutta Diocese and Co-President of Church Mission Society.

The Metropolitan was speaking after visiting the Mother Teresa Leprosy Home, New Delhi on Sunday, March 13, 2011.

The Malankara Church celebrates the second Sunday of the great Lent as ‘Leprosy Sunday’ and the lectionary reads from St. Luke’s Gospel, where the leper was healed through the miraculous act of Jesus Christ.

Metropolitan Mar Dionysius celebrated Holy Qurbana at St. Stephen’s Orthodox Church, Dilshad Garden, New Delhi. As part of the parish’s charity activities the vicar Fr. Jaise K. George and members along with the Metropolitan paid a visit to the Mother Teresa Leprosy Home. Food and sweets were also distributed to the inmates as a token of the love of Jesus Christ towards the suffering. The Metropolitan applauded the service of the sisters at the Leprosy Home and also offered prayers for the institution.

The vicar and youth movement office bearers made all necessary arrangements for the day’s event.

Assistant Metropolitan of Diocese of Delhi Dr. Yuhanon Mar Demetrios, Fr. M.S. Scaria Ramban, Diocesan Secretary, Fr. Sam V. Gabriel, Fr. M.C. Paulose, Fr. Philip M. Samuel, K.T. Chacko IAS, M.G. George Muthoottu, the Lay Trustee, Thomas Mathew and Joy Kunnel accompanied the Pontiff to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Catholicos of the East Calls On the Prime Minister of India


NEW DELHI: Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II called on the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. The audience took place at as a special event at the Prime Minister’s office at 11.00 am on Monday, March 14, 2011.

The Pontiff informed the media personnel waiting to know the details that the meeting was purely a friendly visit. The Catholicos also informed the Prime Minister that the Church was avowed to work for the well being of poor of the society and will support any initiative towards the betterment and development of the nation at large.

The appointment of Pontiff with the Prime Minister evoked a high media interest with spreading assumptions that the Malankara Church wants to enter into active politics.

“The Church did not meet with any one begging seats to compete in local elections. However, competent authorities are made aware of the alarming ignorance towards Malankra Church”, informed the Malankara Metropolitan clearing clouds over the alleged entrance of Malankara Church into active politics. The Pontiff also made it clear that the Church would not work for any political party.

Dr. Yuhanon Mar Dimetrios, Assistant Metropolitan of Diocese of Delhi, Fr. M.S. Scaria Ramban, the Diocesan Secretary, Fr. M.C. Paulose, Fr. Shaji Mathews, Mr. M.G. George Muthoott, the Lay Trustee, George Zachariah, Managing Committee Member and Secretary to the Holiness accompanied the Pontiff in the meeting.

Services that Church Renders are Invaluable: Chief Minister Sheila Dixit


NEW DELHI: “Services that Malankara Church renders in the educational and social welfare fields are invaluable”, said Sheila Dixit, Chief Minister of Delhi.

The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating ‘Santigram Mahila Swayam Sahayath Samooh’, an initiative of Women Empowerment, Diocese of Delhi, at the public reception in honor of the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, organized by the Diocese of Delhi at the INI Tyagaraja Stadium.

“Christian schools keep the highest educational standards. I also realize the services that the Church renders towards social development through various projects”, carried on the Chief Minister. She also handed over passbooks to a few.

Various social, cultural and political leaders attended the function.

Giant Garland to the Supreme Head of the Church from Janakpuri Church


NEW DELHI: A giant garland to the Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II from St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Janakpuri, New Delhi, evoked curiosity among attendees of the public reception in the Pontiff’s honor.

Diocese of Delhi organized this meeting at the INI Tyagaraja Stadium to felicitate the newly installed Supreme Shepherd of Malankara Church on March 13, 2011.

While Fr. P.K. Thomas, Vicar of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Janakpurai and Jiji K. Ninan, the Secretary, garlanded Bava Thirumeni, an overwhelming ovation from the more than 5000 people crowd marked it as a grand appreciation to the act of respect towards the supreme head of their Church.

All parishes from Delhi, Ludhiyana, Punjab, Kanpur, Haryana, and Jaipur paid their reverence to the Highest Shepherd of Orthodox Christians in Malankara.

At the entrance of stadium the Pontiff, Metropolitans and other dignitaries were welcomed with percussional accompaniment, ornamented Umbrellas and floral palates.

More than five thousand faithful arrived to welcome the Pontiff and the organizers presented each one of them with a keychain with an imprint of the Pontiff’s picture as a memento.

Fr. Dr. M.P. George and Sruthi School of Music Form an Astounding World of Music


NEW DELHI: Sruthi Choir led by Fr. Dr. M.P. George formed an astounding world of music at the INI Tyagaraja Stadium, New Delhi, during the public meeting organized by Diocese of Delhi to felicitate the newly installed Supreme Shepherd of Malankara Church on March 13, 2011.

The curtain for the meeting rose with verse line chanted by Fr. Dr. M.P. George in Sanskrit.
Fr. Dr. George, who reached Delhi a week ago, gave special training to the Sruthi Choir, Delhi. Fr. Dr. George is professor of Liturgical Music at the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam and Director of Sruthi School of Liturgical Music. Thomas Alias served as coordinator for the Sruthi Choir, Delhi.

Annie Yohannan, famous Delhi based fashion designer, prepared designs for the attire of Sruthi Choir, Delhi.

The same choir sung during the Holy Qurbana at Hauz Khaz Cathedral, New Delhi, on Sunday Morning as well, which the Pontiff celebrated.

Welcome to Mar Nicholavos at JFK Airport, New York


NEW YORK: A warm welcome was accorded to the newly appointed Metropolitan of North East American Diocese Zachariah Mar Nicholavos at the JFK International Airport, New York.

Senior Metropolitan Mathews Mar Barnabas led the 100 member delegation to receive the Metropolitan, which included priests, Church Managing Committee Members, and a large body of faithful. Thereafter the delegation accompanied the Metropolitan to his residence at Mutton Town.

Fr. John Thomas, the Diocesan Secretary, led the reception at the Diocesan Center. A number of priests and lay people attended the meeting. Representatives of all spiritual organizations of the diocese accorded good wishes to the newly appointed Metropolitan.

Mar Gregorios Orthodox Syrian Church, Baroda, Elevated As Valia Palli


BARODA: Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II declared the Mar Gregorios Orthodox, Baroda, as Valia Palli. The pontifical proclamation was made in the meeting took place on Saturday, 6 March 2011. Metropolitan Dr. Mathews Mar Severios, the Secretary of Holy Episcopal Synod, read out the bull to this effect.

Supreme Head of the Malankara Church led evening prayers and the office of reconciliation (Shubkono) before the Holy Lent.

Members of Baroda Parish accorded a grand welcome and felicitation to the newly installed Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan in a meeting after the evening prayers.

Dr. Mathews Mar Severios, Metropolitan of Kandanadu West Diocese, Pulikkottil Dr. Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Metropolitan of Ahmedabad Diocese, Fr. Dr. Johns Abraham Konattu, the Priests Trustee, and Dr. George Joseph, Malankara Suriyani Christiani Association Secretary, spoke on the occasion.

The Catholicos conveyed his gratitude for the felicitation and the grand welcome in his reply.

Fr. Jacob Mathew, vicar of Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church, Baroda, set on record the gratitude to the Pontiff for elevating the Baroda Parish as Valia Palli. Baroda parish has the largest parish in the newly formed Ahmedabad Diocese in terms of membership.

Before the meeting traditional Gujarati folk dance, mass drill of NCC Cadets, Gujarat Police Band, kids dressed as angels along with altar assistants and priests formed a procession to lead the Pontiff to the Church in a chariot decorated with fresh flowers.
