Former Karnataka CM assures all help to Christian community


BENGALURU : Dr H Kumaraswamy, former Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) President, held a marathon meeting with leaders of various Christian denominations in Bengaluru last week.

The session titled “Convergence 2012” was held at the initiative of Dr Abraham Ruby, CEO of 6th Sense Resources Pvt Ltd.

Bishops, pastors, social activists, politicians, counselors, lay-leaders, doctors, theologians, directors, professors, administrators, educationists, social workers, religious teachers came on a common platform and discussed the issues threadbare.

The day-long convergence meeting was a brain-storming session which held a pre-poll analysis and on the prospects for JD(S) in the state Assembly elections later this year.

Over 100 Christian denomination leaders attended the conference. Well known speakers and leaders of various Christian denominations from Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Catholic Church, Protestant, Indian Pentecostal church, Assemblies of God, CSI and various Christian think tanks like SIACS, BSI, ISI, also spoke.

Fr Thomas Varughese represented the Orthodox community at “Convergence 2012”.

Rev T D Thomas of Indian Pentecostal Church (IPC), Rev Vasanth W Renick from Bible Society of India, and Prem James were the guests.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Kumaraswamy assured the various Christian leaders that their churches and missions would be protected under JDS rule and cited numerous communal issues that occurred during the Congress and the present rule under BJP.

Dr Ruby in his speech praised Dr Kumaraswamy for his initiatives in bringing together all the Christian groups under a roof and said for the first time a political party had connected with the Christian community to know and discuss their problems.

He also thanked all those who made it to the meeting and said they were planning to host such convergence meetings in every district of Karnataka.
It was also decided that 6th Sense will be officially training JDS workers to face their next elections in Karnataka.

It may be recalled that in July under Dr Ruby’s initiative a meeting with Dr Kumaraswamy and Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim, Metropolitan, Bengaluru Diocese was held. The former chief minister had promised all help to the Christian community through the Karnataka Minority Development Corporation and assured to safeguard the aspirations of Christian religious minorities in Karnataka.

Dr Kumaraswamy was presented with a Holy Bible by Dr Vasanth W Renick. William Paul from Interdev coordinated the programme while Prem James delivered the vote of thanks.

A Family in Distress seeks your help


PATHANAMTHITTA: Pazayakavil,Georgekutty, a member of St. George Orthodox Simasana Church, Thattayil, is facing serious heart problem and looking for an urgent help.

Last week Georgekutty was admitted in Parumala St. Gregorios Heart hospital with serious 3 or 4 blocks. The doctor suggested him for an immediate operation to save his life. This operation will cost around Rs. 2.5 Lakh. He is running with ZERO balance and without the help of the community the operation will not be possible.

He have his wife and 2 daughters. His elder daughter is studying for B.Sc nursing in Banglore.(becuase of well wishers support she is paying the fees) and younger one is studying for B.Com

Now the priority is for his surgery. He is indangerous stage. His family background and financials status is very bad. We request the IOH readers are encouraged to help the family in their crisis.

Feast of the Dormition of St. Mary was celebrated in Sydney

SYDNEY: The first Parish Perunal of the St. Mary’s Indian Orthodox Church, North and North-West Sydney was celebrated on Sunday 19 August.

Morning prayers started at 8am followed by Holy Qurbana, Intercessary Prayer to St. Mary and Procession (Rasa). In his message the Vicar Fr. Ferdinand Pathrose reminded all about the love that Jesus has for His mother and encouraged everyone to be more earnest in their intercessory prayers to St. Mary.

The service was followed by a program of songs and a dance-skit with Sunday School children taking centre stage. The perunal concluded with a love feast. Almost two hundred faithful participated in the celebration of the Feast of the Dormition of St. Mary.

Dubai St. Thomas OCYM Unit conducted Blood Donation Drive


DUBAI: Dubai St. Thomas OCYM Unit had Celebrated the Independence Day of India with Blood Donation Drive

On August 17, Dubai OCYM unit marked the 66th independence day in a unique manner by conducting a blood donation drive on the church premises by joining hands with Latifa Hospital.

In the unit meeting that was held in the Church, the independence day function began with a prayer song and Bible reading. A slideshow was conducted on the heroes and the history of India’s freedom struggle.

Vicar, Fr. T. J. Johnson, then led the gathering unit in a pledge of allegiance to mother nation to renew a sense of national pride. In his presidential address, he exhorted the gathering not to take lightly the freedom which our founding fathers gained with a lot of struggle. He also praised the unit for holding the blood donation drive as part of the commitment to the society and the nation that they live in.

In his felicitation speech, the assistant vicar, Fr. Biju Daniel commented on the importance of freedom and how it should be highly prized while at the freedom movement. In spite of the problems and the plurality of religions, languages and cultures, India held together as a nation for the past 66 years, take great pride in being an Indian.

Thomas John, the clinical Pathologist took a highly informative class on blood donation and Hepatitis. Presenting the complex scientific facts in a very concise and engaging manner, he cleared many doubts church members had about blood donation, hepatitis and blood tests.

The joint secretary of the unit, Mrs. Jishi Binny, welcomed the gathering. Thomas.N.U. proposed vote of thanks.

South African Family Confererence 2012 Cancelled


SOUTH AFRICA: St Thomas orthodox Church, South Eastern Region, South Africa that the Family Conference scheduled for 23 to 25th September 2012 is cancelled due to some unavoidable technical problems, informed Dr George Thomas, Trustee.

The new date will be announced in due course, the Trustee added.

NEW DELHI: MGOCSM members of St.John’s Orthodox Church, Mayur Vihar Phase-1,New Delhi had organised an Athapookalam competition among prayer groups at church premises on Sunday 19 August 2012.

The winners of the competition were :1st place: Chilla prayer group, 2nd place: Laxmi Nagar prayer group, 3rd place: Mayur Vihar Ph-1 prayer group, 4th place: I.P. Extension prayer group, 5th place:Mayur Vihar Ph-2 prayer group and 6th place : Ashram prayer group

Vaideeka sangom Thumpamon diocese – Trip to Goa


PATHANAMTHITTA: Clergy Fellowship of Thumpamon diocese had conducted a family tour program to Goa.

Metropolitan Kuriakose Mar Clemis of Thumpamon and Metropolitan Yakob Mar Elias of Brahmavar, Thumpamon diocesan secretary Fr Titus George and Clergy Fellowship secretary Fr Cherian T Samuel were the leaders for the tour.

The team had visited Vasco-Da-Gama St Mary’s Orthodox Church Goa also.

Dr Mar Yulios is chief celebrant at Sohar St George Church Lent, convention


SOHAR, Sultanate of Oman : Ahmedabad Diocese Metropolitan Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios will be the main speaker and chief celebrant for the 8-days lent and Bible convention at the St George Orthodox Church, at PCO Sohar from September 3 to 7, 2012.

The Sohar church is celebrating the convention and the feast of St Mary’s from September 1 to September 7. Dr Mar Yulios will deliver the speeches and offer intercessory prayer for St Mary on all days from 8.30 pm.

On September 6, Dr Mar Yulios will inaugurate the Catholicate Centenary Celebrations and speak on the theme “Church tradition and Catholicate Centenary.”

and On all the has appreciated all the vicars and parishioners for their sincere contributions towards exceeding the target for the Catholicate Day Collection (CDC ) 2011.

On September 7, Friday, the Metropolitan will lead the Holy Eucharist at 8 pm. This will be followed by Apostolic blessing, benediction and Pachoru Nercha.

Fr C S Mathews, Vicar, St George Orthodox Church, Sohar, has requested all the parishioners to participate in the programmes and be blessed.

OCYM Kizhavalloor Unit’s Road Safety Awareness Program on Independence Day


KIZHAVALLOOR, Kerala : OCYM Kizhavalloor Unit had conducted a Road Safety Awareness Program on Independence day after the Shoonyo Service.

The Vicar, Fr.Cherian.T. Samuel inaugurated the program by giving the first awareness brochure to Joshuakutty, the parish trustee.

The awareness rally was flaged-off by the Vicar. The rally covered the area Chittoormuk, Konni, Ettimuttippadi, Mallaserry, Kumbazha and Poonkav . Around 45 OCYM members attended the rally and distributed the brochures to the public.

The Road Safety Awareness Program was well received by the public. M.P Shri. Anto Antony applauded the OCYM unit for organizing such a program for the benefit of the public.
