MGOC Muscat to host renowned orator Joshua Achen for Family Welfare Conference

MUSCAT: Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church (MGOC), Muscat will host Fr Dr T J Joshua, one of the foremost orators of Malankara Orthodox Church, for the Family Welfare Conference and Get Together on October 28, Thursday.

Reputed Biblical scholar and interpreter, renowned convention speaker and family counselor, and author of over 40 books and hundreds of published articles, Fr Joshua, aged 81, is perhaps making his first visit to Muscat Orthodox church.

“In your presence, we have fullness of joy” (Psalms 16:11) will be the theme of the conference to be held at St Thomas Church, Ruwi. The meet will be conducted in the evening from 7 pm to 9.30 pm. Registration forms are available at the church.

There will also be a Chain Bible Reading at home from October 18-27. Each family can select a convenient Bible reading time beginning from 12 am for a day with a 30-minute duration. Each week in October will have a different thought of the week to dwell and practice upon.

On October 1, the Family Welfare Month was kicked off by Rev. Matthew P Thomas, Vicar, Oman Marthoma Church by lighting the traditional lamp in the presence of MGOC Rev Fr James Geevarghese.

Fr Matthew in his message called for upholding family values by each church member and to set an example for the next generation. ‘Marriage is not a contract but a sacrament’ he said and urged each family to uphold Christian values and principles.

Fr Dr Joshua arrives in Muscat on October 27 and will stay on till November 13 for the church harvest festival, week-long convention and Sunday School Conference.

Fr Joshua is the Professor of New Testament in the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam for the last 50 years. He is blessed with a golden tongue to propagate the word of God. Serampore University awarded Joshua Achen with honorary doctorate in recognition of his extensive service and excellence in the field of theological and biblical studies.

Other posts held relate to former Director General Orthodox Sunday School Association, Director, Divya Sandhesam and Karunya Guidance Centre, Kottayam. He is also a regular contributor in Malayala Manorama (Innathe Chinthavishayam). On his 80th birthday last year, the Sunday School Association of Malankara Orthodox Church released the book, Bibilile Kudumbangal, written by Joshua Achen.

Orthodox Family Conference Commences at Dublin

DUBLIN: Family conference of all Orthodox faithful in Ireland has commenced at Dublin on October 1st, 2010 at 6.30 pm along with evening prayers.

On 2nd October programs begin at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Dublin at 9.30 am.

Organizers prepared comfortable stay for faithful from various parts of Ireland.

Chor-Episcopos Abraham Ipe Mangattu Passes Away

KOTTAYAM: One of the prominent priests of Malankara Church and Vicar of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Kumaramkodu of the Diocese of Kottayam, Chor-Episcopos Abraham Mangattu passed away.

Funeral services will be at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Vellukkutta at 3.30 pm and Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Ivanios will lead services.

Chor-Episcopos Abraham Mangattu is survived by wife Lizykutty, Vadakkeveettil, Mavelikkara, Liju Susan, Lizu Elizabeth, and Abraham Littu Ipe (Kuwait). Fr. Saji Thomas, Palathinkal, Kumbalampoika and Jinu, Kayyalackal, Anandappalli are his sons in law.

Chor-Episcopos Abraham Mangattu served various parishes in Bombay, Calcutta and Kottayam Dioceses and parishes in Gulf as well.

He had also served as Diocesan Secretary of Calcutta Diocese, Vice-president of Ecumenical movement, Puthuppalli, and as Patron of Mangattu Family Conference.

U-Turn’, The First Movie of Malankara Church to Release on October 3rd

KOTTAYAM: Malankara Orthodox Church is observing the last three months of 2010, namely, October, November and December as Months of Anti-addiction Initiative. This is to be accomplished under auspices of the Department of Human Empowerment of the Church.

As part of this initiative a broad action plan was coined to create awareness against increasing usage of addicting stuffs in the society. This action plan is to be implemented at parishes and in schools run by the Church. Also it is aimed at young people and students, the most vulnerable cross section of the society towards usage of addicting materials.

The movie ‘U-Turn’ is also part of the ‘Anti-addiction Initiative’. Malankara Church is making a movie for the first time and the main thrust of this movie falls upon dangers that alcohol addiction poses in the personal life of an individual, in his family and in the society at large.

Sunny, a railway employee and an alcohol addict, is the main cast in this movie. His affinity towards alcohol brings nothing but tears into the life of Annie, his wife, and both their children. It even threatens the existence of their family. Life of another girl, Elsa, who has no connection with this family, also tumbles up because of Sunny’s affinity to alcohol. The movie attempts to exhort all alcohol addicts to make a ‘U-Turn’ and everyone not to succumb into the dangers of addiction. A small documentary explaining the message of this movie is also added at the end.

Messages from the Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan Baselios Marthoma Didymus I, Catholicos Elect Metropolitan Paulose Mar Milithios, Metropolitan Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasios, famous poetess Sugathakumari, and celebrated cine artist and an Orthodox faithful Lalu Alex have also been incorporated into the documentary.

Famous Malayalam actors like Mahesh, Kaladharan, Karthik, Jimmy and Seema G Nair are donning life to various characters in the movie.

Fr. Varghese Lal, renowned and award winning documentary director, who has more than 15 documentaries under his belt, is directing this movie. Fr. Yuhanon John is serving as producer and Fr. P.A. Philip perfected play and script writing. Krishnakumar realizes cinematography.

The movie will be released on October 3rd at Thejas Auditorium, Palarivattom, Ernakulam.

Babu M. Jacob Passes Away

AL-AIN, ABU DHABI: Babu M. Jacob (62) passed away in a car accident at Al-Ain. Babu was Civil Engineer at the Al-Ain Diwan Consultant Company.

Babu was working at Abu Dhabi for more than three decades and had accomplished commendable services for the Orthodox Church and society there. He rendered meritorious services to the Church at various capacities like member of the construction committee, St. George Orthodox Cathedral, Abu Dhabi, and also as Sunday School Head Master there. He has proved his organizational worth through commendable services as Zonal Secretary of Sunday School, UAE Region as well.

Babu was son of one of the famous Orthodox priests from Ernakulam District, namely, Fr. Jacob, Mureeckal, Thiruvaniyoor.

The accident took place, while he was walking within the company premises at 9.00 pm on Wednesday September 29.

Alice Babu Jacob (Malikayil, Pathamuttom, Kottayam) is his wife. Milan Susan Babu is his daughter and Dr. Ajay Jacob (Puvanammoottil, Vallikkodu, and at present with Intel, USA) is his Son in Law.

Late J.George, Prof. M.J. Thomas (Former Principal, Baselius College, Kottayam), Baby, Lillykutty, and Rajamma are his siblings.

The body will reach Kerala today and funeral services will be as follows
