KOTTAYAM: The great shepherd of Malankara decided to step down.

It is in a special session of the Holy Episcopal Synod that was convened at the Catholicate Palace, Devalokam, Kottayam, today that the Pontiff decided to disclose on his abdication.

“The Almighty allowed me to lead the Church for the last five years. Looking back, I consider everything as grace of God. I love the Church and the people of God. I also thank all of you, who stood as strong support to me during these years”, said the Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan to the members of the Holy Episcopal Synod in the preface of his speech.

“For the rest of my life, I want to retreat in prayer and wish to set aside myself from all administrative responsibilities”, carried on the Catholicos.

Twenty Metropolitans including Dr. Geevarghese Mar Osthathios attended the meeting.

A meeting of the Holy Episcopal Synod will officially convene tomorrow. Details of the abdication will be released to the media thereafter.

The reigning Catholicos himself will consecrate his successor. With this His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Didymus I will have the rare honor of being the sole Catholicos of Malankara, who has been consecrated by his predecessor and of consecrating his successor as well.

His Holiness The Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Didymus I was enthroned at St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Church (Parumala Pally) at Parumala on October 31, 2005.

Historians will depict this father as the great skipper, who depended on the power of prayer than secular administrative skills to lead the children of God. Great meeting at Kottayam and two flawless Malankara Associations bear witness to the above said fact.

By Grace of Almighty the new Catholicos elect is going to take office shortly, since the ruling Catholicos H.H. Didimos I, after an ardent tenure has wished to relinquish office due to old age.

Internet media in other forums describes the following news-
29.10.2010, 4.40 PM;

“The Catholicos handed over the position of “Malankara Metropolitan” to Catholicos elect Paulose Mar Milithios today evening. The Malankara Metropolitan, who is to be elected by the Malankara Association, was handed over power, breaking the rules of the 1934 Constitution. It is said that Mar Milithios will be consecrated as Catholicos coming Monday. As per confirmed reports, Catholicos elect will be appointed as the new Malankara Metropolitan today night. Malankara Metropolitan who is to be elected by the Malankara Association will be handed over power tonight by the incumbent without any election”.

Request the Editors for the awareness of the General Public, to clarify the validity of the claims made above and to add a note including when the Catholicos elect H.G. Paulose Mar Milithios was elected by the Malankara Association as the “Successor to the Malankara Metropolitan” and the date and venue in which the Malankara Association was held and the official release of the election results.

Also please include a note on whether “Successor to the Catholicos of the East” was elected in the same venue and if not kindly disclose the details of the same.

There is nothing new about it.Since the time H.H.Augen bava’s election as catholicos and Malankara metropolitan no seperate election is held for electing only Malankara metropolitan as the two posts are held by the same person.The 1934 constitution (clause 98) also says ‘ the Catholicos may also hold the office of theMalankara Metropolitan’.So the above question is irrelevant and un warranted.
