Chor-Episcopos Thomas Mundukuzhy Passes Away


ALBANY: Very. Rev. Chor-episcopos Thomas Mundukuzhy had passed away earlier this evening in Albany. He was 74. Chor-episcopos Thomas Mundukuzhy was one of the most active and dedicated priests of Malankara Orthodox Church in the American Diocese.

Chor-episcopos Thomas Mundukuzhy had organized the Sunday School of the American Diocese in a systematic way and was the Director of S.S for a long period. He also served as the secretary to Late Mathews Mar Athanasius (Later His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews I ), while as a Deacon . In this period he had compiled and published the “Priest companion” in Malayalam, a small pocket book for the use of priests. Later he wrote the book “Our Church” in English which is a best seller among English reading faithful outside Kerala. More than 25 books he authored.

He is survived by his wife Mrs Achamma Thomas, children Vinu, Anil, Mohan, Annie, daughter-in law Bindu, son-in-law Robin, grandchildren Andrew and Aaron. Chor episcopos was son of Kunnamthanam Mudukuzhy Late Mathai Philipose and Mariamma in Pathanamthitta District. Brothers : Philipose, Late Varghese, Philipose (Baby), Alexander ( Thankachen), Mathew (Kunjumon), Aniyan. Sisters: Mariamma and Sosamma.

Chor episcopos had migrated to America in 1967 for his higher studies in Journalism. Later he served as an editor in NBC Television for a period.

Chor episcopos had conducted Holy services in Kingston last Sunday, where he was shepherding for many years. He was also the Vicar of St.Paul’s Orthodox Church, Albany and Syracuse Orthodox Church. Chor episcops also served in Toronto St. George Orthodox Church and Brooklyn St. Mary’s. He had an exemplary life. He has touched the lives of many through his sermons and writings.

Malankara Association to meet on Wednesday

Parumala: March 19, 2007 :: A meeting of the Malankara Syrian Christian Association, the 4,051-member parliament of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, will be held at St. Gregorios Nagar on the Parumala Seminary premises on Wednesday march 21. 2007.

According to Association secretary Dr. Alexander Karackal and publicity convener Advocate Biju Oommen Muringasseril, the newly elected 1,319 clergy representatives and 2,732 lay members of the association from different parishes coming under 25 dioceses of the Church will attend the meeting.

Wednesday’s meeting would elect the new Priest trustee and lay trustee of the Church, besides a 129-member managing committee. The managing committee will comprise 43 priests and 86 lay members.

According to the final list published at Devalokam Aramana, Fr.Dr.Johns Abraham Konatt and Fr.Dr.O.Thomas are contesting as Priest Trustee. M.G.George Muthoot, Roy M.Mathew Muthoot, Paul Mathai, Dr.Kurien Mathai and M.C.Paulose are for the post of Lay Trustee. 50% plus one vote of the Association representatives present in the Association is required to win the election in both these posts. The results would be declared by 10 p.m.

Malankara Metropolitan His Holiness Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos I, the supreme head of the Church, will preside over the meeting.

The Catholicos His Holiness Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos I, Catholicos Elect Metropolitan H.B.Paulose Mar Milithios and other bishops will be escorted to the venue in a customary procession after prayers at the tomb of St. Gregorios at St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Church at 12.30 p.m.

The association members should register at the counters between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Separate polling booths would be set up for priests and lay members. State Land Revenue Commissioner (Tamil Nadu) O.P. Sosamma would be the returning officer for Wednesday’s elections.

The current Managing Committee of the Church would meet on Tuesday March 20, 2007 at Parumala Seminary to evaluate the progress on the preparations done for the Association Meeting.
